Kirk Mahoney, Ph.D., loves to walk and run, and his SpryFeet.com website provides practical research for runners and walkers. You might be the kind of person who decides that you should not walk 10K steps/day because of some or all of the following reasons:
Reason #1: It might make you lose weight.
Surely you already are carrying as few pounds as you would ever want. You cannot afford to be any skinnier, right? Think of the cost of having to buy new clothes, if you were to lose weight. Think of the envy that you would feel from your friends, if you were to lose weight. After all, your friends are accustomed to the weight that you carry now. Think of having the energy to walk stairs instead of riding in a high-tech elevator or up a beautiful escalator, if you were to lose weight. Surely you do not want any of those burdens.
Reason #2: It might prevent illnesses and diseases.
Why be different than others? Are you not tough enough to handle a heart attack or stroke? Do you believe that you are so special that you should not have osteoporosis? Do you not enjoy being out of breath like so many others after climbing a single flight of stairs? What makes you want to be so "special"?
Reason #3: It might extend your life.
Life is hard enough as it is. Who wants to live any longer? Do you want to meet the man or woman of your dreams? Do you want to see your children or grandchildren grow up? Do you want to grow old gracefully with your lifelong love? All of that sounds too hard. What if "extend your life" simply means more life in your years? Being more engaged in life sounds too hard, too.
Reason #4: It might put you in control of your emotions and when you express them.
Aren't emotions supposed to be out of your control? If you are in control of your emotions, then you cannot use them as excuses for hurting someone, for not being friendly, or for not taking actions to improve your life. Living an excuse-free life seems too difficult. If you become happier with your health and fitness, then you will be less likely to express displaced anger and "fly off the handle" at others. Where is the fun in that?
Reason #5: It might improve your relationships.
Is life not supposed to be filled with drama? If you become a calm individual, then your spouse or partner will not get to experience the drama of you blowing up with him or her all the time. If you get more energy, then your sluggish family members might adopt your daily walking goal, too, and then what will happen to all those fights about nobody having the energy to do anything? If you spend time walking regularly with friends or neighbors, then where is the "Us versus Them" excitement? Improved relationships could lead to a very boring life. Who needs that?
On the other hand, if these reasons are appealing to you, then ignore these down-sides and start or keep walking 10K steps/day!
