Experience Barcelona’s Array of Artistic Treasures

Travellers the world over agree: the city of Barcelona is synonymous with breathtaking art and a truly vibrant culture. Boasting streets lined with awe-inspiring structures and a culture that invites unlike any other, Barcelona is simply one of Europe’s – not to mention the world’s – most exciting places to visit.

Yet even in the realm of its stupendous artistic scenery, Barcelona presents a mix of creative styles – and, of course, names behind those styles. The city is renowned as the birthplace of some of the world’s most distinctive artists and artistic methods, whether in the realm of fine art, architecture, literature or performing arts – so it’s no wonder that culture enthusiasts continually flock to Barcelona to set eyes upon its many artistic treasures. Among the city’s most famous artists are Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudi, and Joan Miró - each famous for unique styles, prominent stylistic progressions, and notable works.
<BR><BR>
Pablo Picasso spent his formative years in Barcelona, attending the art school La Llotja in the Plaça Palau. Today, visitors can see some of Picasso’s earliest works, as well as paintings from the Blue Period at the Museu Picasso – only a short distance away from where the artist studied. In the Plaça Nova, also near the museum, fans of Picasso can set their eyes on the artist’s only piece of public art in the city: three friezes on the façade of the Col·legi d’Arquitectes building, based on original drawings by Picasso.

Antoni Gaudi is another name commonly associated with Barcelona – and for good reason. Some of the city’s most iconic landmarks are creations based on Gaudi’s ideas and designs, and are largely responsible for the city’s eclectic look. Some of Gaudi’s most notable works in the city include Casa Batiló, Casa Calvet, La Pedrera, Park Güell, and the Sagrada Família – his best known work and one of the most prominent symbols of Barcelona.

Finally, Barcelona-born artist Joan Miró is famous for iconic works like the mosaic along La Rambla, a large ceramic mural on the wall of Terminal B in the city’s airport, and the sculpture Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird), which has stood in the reflecting pool in the Parc de Joan Miró since 1983, after the artist’s death. Visitors can see many more of Miró’s works – including sculptures, tapestries, ceramics and paintings – in a museum dedicated to the artist, the Fundació Miró.

With remarkable works such as these gracing the city of Barcelona, culture enthusiasts won’t experience a dull moment.
