When planning for a party decide the venue first in accordance with the theme of the party. Finalize on the best catering hall  you can afford or a picturesque outdoor if it is a fun and frolic party.  See the venue is spacious to accommodate all your guests in comfort. There should be ample room for furniture, sit and to move around. Depending upon the climate you may need a location which is climate controlled. While outdoors can work out for a birthday party for formal wedding ceremony the wedding location should be in a banquet hall or a premier catering hall in your locality or elsewhere.        

Keep tab of timings. There should be enough time before food is served for the guests to drink and mingle around in leisure. Once food is served there should be reasonable time gap for courses to be served one by one. If it is a buffet lunch or dinner a limited batch of guests should be served so as not to crowd the dining area.   

Choose the serving staff and the cooks well if you are not hiring a catering company for food service and serving. Trained experience staff will do greater justice to the event. Never be understaffed. Remember in this case you are the event manager and supervisor hence responsible to the whole event. Tend to each and every component of the party which may be tiring but if you are sincere you will benefit.  

When it comes to food there should be no shortage so plan the amount and ration before hand or consult an event planner. The chef will help you in accurately mapping the requirements.    
Plan the menu well and keep the sensitivity of the guests in mind, say for example keep some items purely vegetarian for your vegan friends. In case of guests being from a different region or ethnicity serve some of their localized favorites if budget allows. Enough quantity of hors d’oeuvres per person should be made depending upon whether it is pre dinner or post dinner cocktails.
Order cutlery and serving items as glass ware, wine glasses, beer mugs in the right amount - a few extra will certainly help. Keep into mind each servings and helping during the event.

The furniture should suit the event so should the décor. A birthday party event is much different from a formal wedding ceremony reception catering style in each case is different. Organize neat clean and smart preparation tables and waste receptacles if it is a plated dinner.
