Having a PHD in nutrition, Galvin Nussingten knows Pistachio Nuts are cholesterol free, high in fiber, and a great source of protein for your body. Galvin recommends throwing a handful of these delicious Nut gift baskets into your favorite trail mix for a healthy afternoon snack.
I think "Trail Mix" is a much more appealing name than "Gorp." Gorp is a term that has been used since the early 20th century and it refers to Granola, Oats, Raisins and Peanuts. Regardless of the name you use, it is a delicious, nutritious mixture of nuts, dried fruits, seeds, berries, and candy. This snack dates back to ancient times, when nomads would eat a mix that included dried meats, as well. Easy to store and carry, this mixture is great for people who want something to munch on while enjoying the great outdoors or for anyone looking for a quick, healthy snack. This blend is referred to as "Scroggin" in New Zealand and Australia, which makes the term "Trail Mix" even more appealing.
When I hear the term "Trail Mix", I think of pioneers blazing a trail with their horses and wagons, snacking on seeds and dried fruits along the way. As per the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, Harmony Food Company of California was the first to coin the term in 1968 when it introduced its "Original Trail Mix".
However it got its name trail mix is a popular snack, more recently being made available in vending machines for those who need a quick pick-me-up. For people like hikers, bikers, and hunters who enjoy outdoor activities, trail mix has long been a source of energy. There is quite a variety of trail mix recipes. Peanuts, raisins and chocolate chips are some of the most commonly used and most economical ingredients.
I enjoy concocting my own trail mix recipes. Pistachios are a favorite of mine and I have come across a great company that produces trail mix with a combination of pistachios, dried cranberries, Dutch chocolate chips, and white chocolate bits. Regrettably, due to shipping issues, this is only available during the cooler times of the year, so I buy a lot when they are available. When I run out of them, I just make my own! I purchase high quality, shelled pistachios and include them in a mixture of dried banana chips, dark chocolate covered coffee beans and some of my other personal favorites. Pistachios are extremely nutritious, including fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamin B6, and the good fats, monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fats which have cholesterol lowering properties. The banana chips provide potassium and other vitamins, while the dark chocolate provides antioxidants and the coffee beans provide a jolt of caffeine.
Some people believe that pistachios should not be included in trail mix because they are so costly. I beg to differ. I always purchase in quantity and this results in a lower cost per pound. In addition, trail mix can take the place of a meal if you are on the go or don't have enough time to have a sit-down meal. There is just no comparison between trail mix and the normal fast food meal that provides minimal nutritional value but lots of fat.
Come on... taste trail mix with pistachio nuts. I'm sure you will love them just as much as I do. Enjoy!
