Wine Tasting Events - Tips for the 20th Annual Zinfandel Festival

This coming January, the Association of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers (ZAP) will be holding its 20th Anniversary event at Fort Mason in San Francisco. The event spans a three-day period from January 27-29, reaching a crescendo with the Grand Tasting event on Saturday, January 29.

Almost 20 years ago Zinfandel was an underdog wine varietal. But a few devoted Zinfandel lovers were determined to give the maligned red wine varietal its rightful place among the best red wines in the world.

Today ZAP has a membership of hundreds of Zinfandel producing wineries, and thousands of loyal Zinfandel fans. ZAP has become recognized as the largest single-varietal wine tasting event in the world.

The Grand Tasting will have over 250 wineries pouring their wines, and an estimated 10,000 Zin lovers will be there for the wine tasting event. The event will be housed in two pavilions, the Herbst and Festival Buildings.

Organizers anticipate the event to sell out. Patrons will have the opportunity to taste barrel samples, new releases and top wines from the premier Zinfandel producers in the world. They will have a chance to meet winemakers and winery representattive and get answers to all those "wine-geek" questions they have been dying to ask.

Tips for Attending the ZAP Grand Tasting

If you are attending the event, here are some tips to get you through this wine tasting marathon.

1) Parking: The Fort Mason Parking lot will fill up, parking is limited. So if you want to park close to the pavilions, get there a couple hours before the event starts at 1:00 PM. Fort Mason charges for parking. The first hour is free and a the maximum charge is $8. Public transportation and car pooling is recommended. You can park along the "Green" next to the bay, which may not be a bad idea. The fresh air and walk back will help you "wake up a little". Utilizing a car service or having a designated driver wouldn't be a bad idea either.

2) Eat a good lunch. The Grand Tasting event is from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, and have food in your stomach will serve you well. You will be handed a loaf of bread when you enter, and you should nibble on that throughout the event. There are also tables with assorted cheeses and breads throughout the buildings.

3) Attire: Casual and comfortable clothing is recemmended. Wear comfortable shoes (no/low heels). The weather can be chilly and pavilions drafty, so bring a coat. Coat check is available.

4) Drink lots of water throughout your stay at the event.

5) If you are in the wine and/or restaurant industry, bring pens and a notebook to take notes. A clipboard will come in handy. You may also want to bring a camera for your blog or newsletter.

6) You will receive a program with all the attending wineries listed. Wineries are arranged in alphabetical order.

This is a wonderful and fun wine tasting event, so bring your passion for Zinfandel and inquiring palates and have a great time.
