Beginners guide to Plymouth Argyle Football Club

Plymouth Argyle Football Club often referred to as the “Pilgrims” is one of England’s popular football clubs.

The club is based out of Plymouth in England and gets its nickname “Pilgrims” from the group of people that left England from Plymouth to go to America in the 17th Century. The club itself was founded in the year 1886 and was initially known as the Argyle F.C. The other nicknames of the Plymouth Argyle F.C include Argyle and the Greens. This football club has its home stadium in the Theatre of Greens otherwise known as Home Park at Plymouth. Visitors to Plymouth should not fail to get tickets to a football match when this team is playing.

Although the Greens do not hold a place in the prestigious English Premiere League, they are still a considerable force to reckon with, and have a very large fan following. It is no surprise therefore, that the fans of the Pilgrims choose to undertake long journeys across the country just to watch their team play and are referred to as the “green army.”

The Home stadium can hold just under 20,000 fans, and gets filled to capacity during the Pilgrims’ big games. Top players and favourites among the green army include captain, Romain Larrieu, Krisztián Timár and team captain, Carl Fletcher.

The club’s colours are green and white, which are the colours of both their home and away jerseys. The crest of the club is a shield with a depiction of the Mayflower, which is the ship on which the pilgrims left to the New World. The Plymouth Argyle Football Club also has a mascot which follows them on all their matches. The team’s mascot is the Pilgrim Pete who is a very jolly character with a large nose and moustache and is dressed in a pilgrim’s hat. Some of the team’s top competitors include Bristol City and the Portsmouth club and matches between Plymouth and either of these two teams are a sight to behold with football fans for both teams sporting their team colours and cheering energetically.

The stadium is situated in the centre of Plymouth in Central Park, an area which is a lovely place to walk around on a summer or spring day. Filled with dozens of rugby and football pitches and a great place for jogging and walking this is also an easy enough walk from the main train station for visiting fans.
