For the last 9 out of 11 years, and 18 out of 24 years, there have been Florida Gators picked in the first round of the NFL Draft. This year is no exception. Earlier today, Derrick Harvey was picked in the first round for 2008. Derrick is the 45th player to be picked in the first round, for this decade, tying the 1990’s record for the most players picked.
It’s not a surprise that Harvey was picked. He certainly has the talent. The surprise is the lengths that Jacksonville went to in order to get Harvey. Harvey, who was the best defensive end in football in 2006, bar none, was the eighth overall selection by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who wanted Harvey badly enough to trade for their first round position (26th) and two third round picks plus a fourth round choice to Baltimore in order to move up and draft Harvey.
Florida Coach Urban Meyer said that he was “very happy for Harvey. He is an exceptional player and an exceptional person from an exceptional family. He has always done things right both on and off the field and it has paid off for him today. He is joining a terrific organization and I am glad that he will be playing right around the corner.”
Derrick Harvey is the highest of UF players to be drafted since Gerard was number three pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2001. The Gators have a strong history in the NFL Draft, and Harvey is no exception. Harvey, #91 for the Gators, will have a great future in the NFL. Make sure to keep your eyes open for him in upcoming Jaguars games.
The fact that Derrick Harvey placed so well in the NFL Draft is a credit to UF, and, specifically to coach Meyer guidance of his team and players. It should move Gator fans to be proud of being part of a great school. Show your spirit and support. Wear your colors and official Gator merchandise.

As If Things Weren’t Tough Enough…
Basketball season ground to a difficult halt for the Florida Gators several weeks ago, but considering the fact that the team lost their experienced players at the end of last season, the young, inexperienced current team fought the best it could as far as the NIT finals. It wasn’t a pretty end, but experience is a hard, but great, teacher, and this team learned some lessons that wil help it come out more stable next season.
