The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team after Houston's previous franchise, the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans), moved to Nashville, Tennessee. The club is one of five in the NFL that has yet to qualify for the Super Bowl, the only team in the league that has not achieved a playoff berth, and the only team that has not achieved a winning season.
The Houston Texans' principal owner and chairman is Bob McNair and the minority owner and vice chairman is Chuck Watson. The Harris County Sports Authority also is a minority owner of the team.
The Texans launched their inaugural campaign on September 8, 2002 against the Dallas Cowboys at Reliant Stadium. The Texans shocked their intrastate rivals 19-10, becoming just the second expansion team ever to win their first game (after the Minnesota Vikings in 1961).
Houston NFL 2002 celebrates the official groundbreaking of the new stadium that started to house the team when it begins play in 2002. The 69,500-seat state-of-the-art facility was the world's first retractable-roof football stadium. Houston NFL 2002 is a co-tenant of the stadium with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The Texans became the first NFL team in 41 years to win their expansion debut, stunning the Dallas Cowboys 19-10 before 69,604 at Reliant Stadium. QB David Carr throws two touchdown passes, including a 19-yarder to TE Billy Miller for the club's first-ever touchdown. DT Seth Payne sacks Cowboys QB Quincy Carter in the end zone for a safety to clinch the victory.
