I am a graduate of a SWAC school, which is the conference that Steve McNair played in while he was in college At Alcorn State University. So unlike a lot of the world, I was aware of him before he was drafted and I am very proud of his accomplishments. I always rooted for him and was glad to see him do well.
I had one personal "almost" personal encounter with Steve a few years back. When the Houston Oilers first became the Tennessee Titans and were playing in Memphis I interviewed with one of Memphis' largest businesses, Federal Express. On the flight back was non other than one, Steve "air" McNair. Of course they introduced the celebrity on the flight and he seemed very cordial.
There was a layover as we were on our way back to Mississippi in Nashville. That was the first time that I realized that although celebrities may fly on planes wit the rest of us, they do have special accommodations. As I sat out in the common area waiting on the connecting flight Steve was nowhere to be found. It was not until the connection was announced that he appeared out of nowhere again to get on the flight. I'm sure that wherever he was, was a whole lot nicer than where I was.
Anyway, we caught the connecting flight into Jackson and although I wanted to ask for an autograph, I did not. We bought caught our perspective rides home and that was the last that I ever saw him in person.
Regardless of the outcome, the circumstances of his death are tragic. Right now, it appears that this was a murder - suicide carried out by the 20 year old female that he was with. It always makes me wonder what people are going through that is so bad that they would take their own lives.
I have heard more good things said about Steve in the last two days than I think I have heard during his entire career. Like a lot fo people, I think he will be more popular in death than he was in life. It's a shame that this is what it may take, but I think if the voting was today, he would make the hall of fame.
For Steve's sake and the young ladies sake, I just hope that they are now resting in peace.
