Decorating With Lamps 101

How important lamps are to the look and feel of a home can't be overstated. While you may have designed and decorated your rooms with taste and care, you'll find that the lighting will ultimately contribute to how the rooms are perceived by the others.

Choosing the right lamp for your home requires deliberation and knowledge about available options and features. Given the availability of various types of lamps and lighting options such as floor lamps, table lamps, down lighters, recessed lighting, reading lamps, wall lamps, hanging lamps, and chandeliers to name a few, this becomes even more important.

When selecting lamps you have to observe and decide what you need the lamps for. What kind of actions or tasks will be performed in a particular room and what kind of lighting should you provide so the tasks can be successfully completed? Will the room be adequately lighted by the lamp of interest? Do you need to draw attention to a particular design or object? What kind of mood do you want to create? Those are the type of questions you'll have to answer before making a choice.

Generally lamps are used in three ways. They provide light to carry out certain tasks like reading, sewing, and cooking. Usually these type of lamps, which are typically called task lamps, need to be bright. Lamps also provide ambient light to rooms so that people can move and observe objects and other people. Ambient lamps also create a mood for the room. These lamps don't need to be as bright as task lamps. Thirdly lamps can be used to draw attention to, or accent an area or object. These lamps known as accent lamps. But usually, in order to save space, most lamps can be multi-functional and used in all three ways mentioned above.

Options
We will now look at some of the lighting options available.

Floor lamps are great source of ambient light and can double as accent lamps as well. They can also light particular tasks if suitably placed. They come in a huge variety of brands, sizes, and styles. The important thing to consider when selecting a floor lamp is where you want to place it, the kind of light it will provide, and the amount of space it will take up.

Table Lamps have one feature that distinguishes them from other kinds of lamps; they are highly portable. Table lamps can function as task lamps, ambient lamps, and accenting lamps easily. They can also be used to add a touch of decorative flair, even when they are not used. Table lamps are generally adjustable and their shades too can be changed as required.

Hanging paper lanterns while extremely decorative and great on saving space, they may not suit all tastes. However, if you look hard enough and if you are determined enough you may find or create one that will suit the look and feel of your room. They are good for ambient lighting since they do not take up any floor space at all, they are great for places in the house where people congregate.

Wall lamps and conventional hanging lamps can be used for ambient lighting and for accenting. They can come in a great variety of types and can be made to suit any decorative styles you require. They too do not take up any floor space.

Most of the mentioned lamp types as well as those not mentioned can be made into decorative features by changing their shades, brightness, color and size. Lamp shades which can come in various styles ranging from time honored Tiffany to Mica to modern. You can assume these styles by changing their patterns, colors, and materials. Type of bulbs whether they be incandescent, fluorescent, or LED, can also have an effect on the lamps' brightness, color, size and the energy consumption. You should also pay attention to the stands, and brackets in order get the best out of your lamps decoration wise.

In conclusion, when you select lamps you have to take into account your own lighting, decorating, and spatial requirements, and match them with available options to achieve the best results.
