Futon Mattresses: the Nightmare is Over

Everybody knows that the prospect of sleeping on a futon mattress can be a little frightening. It always happens in the same kind of way; your friend offers you a place to stay while you are in his town for a few days. You finally arrive after a long day of traveling and plop your economically sized weekend duffle bag on the floor. Your generous and thoughtful friend leads you to your sleeping quarters for the next little while and your heart sinks as your eyes take in and your brain absorbs a sagging futon, all spread out and ready to kill backs. You don’t show your disappointment and instead insist that not only is the futon a spectacular accommodation, but that you would have been more than happy with a little warm floor space. Of course little does your friend realize how true that statement is; compared to a torturous futon, a little warm floor space would be a welcome alternative.

Luckily there have been a massive amount of developments in the world of futon mattresses. You no longer have to be terrified at the thought of spending the night at your friend’s house; tossing and turning on that evil slab of foam; secretly nursing a fiery knot in your back while insisting to your gracious friend that you slept well and soundly. The mattress is a changing, and the purpose of this article is to give you…

The Top Three Reasons Why You Should No Longer Fear a Futon Mattress

Reason number 3:

Luckily, the standards for futon mattress stuffing have been raised; the old fillers banned and the new ones subject to vigorous quality tests. The days when futons were stuffed with beach rocks and common farm hay are no longer; as are the days when futons were filled with the stuff of auto-shop dumpsters and construction site waste. Today futon mattresses are filled with only the finest cotton padding and layers upon layers of lush stuffing; all expertly wadded and filled to maximize comfort.

Reason number 2:

Remember those mornings when you would wake up on a futon and the looming dread of permanent paralysis filled you until you could finally wiggle your toes again. Or how about the wealth of restless half-sleeps endured on a futon, when you could feel the knots in your back throbbing and growing to the size of pumpkins in October. Well you can stuff those worries in a sack mister because you never have to fear for your permanent physical well being again with today’s futons. Modern futon mattresses are made with innerspring coils to support the special contours of your back; incredibly comfortable and more traditionally styled, with the added flexibility of still converting into a couch. Innersprings give bounce and life to futon mattresses, infusing them with unsurpassable warmth.

Reason number 1:

When futons gained their initial popularity in the United States and Canada, their main selling point was their versatility. “Observe!” those zany American salesmen of the 70’s would declare, “A bed AND a couch in one quick and easy maneuver!” This emphasis on the couch part of the futon caused the design to include wooden arm rests on the sides of the futon. Those of you have owned a futon from the past will recall their convenience; there was nothing easier to rest a drink on than the sturdy wooden arm rest of a futon. Unfortunately, these wooden arm rests were also incredibly hazardous to any and all dozing craniums in the vicinity. If I had a dollar and a cupcake for every time I hit my head on my own wooden futon I would have a small fortune and mouthful of cavities today. These days, you have the delightful option of bypassing the dangerous arms altogether or opting for curved metal arms that would likely be far less risky to the melon.
