Modern furniture pieces are versatile furnishings that are available in a variety of materials. While you’re probably more aware of metal or glass, there are still several pieces in this type of collection that are manufactured from wood. But unlike the other materials, wooden pieces have their own set of considerations in order to properly judge quality. So when before buying wood furniture for your house, here are the three most important things to look at.

The foremost marker of the quality of wooden modern furniture is the source. The type of wood used, in addition, also affects the use, appearance and the price of the piece. Cherry wood, for instance, are more expensive than pine. Generally, though, wooden furniture is either made from softwood or hardwood.
Birch, oak, maple, cherry, walnut and mahogany are all hardwoods; and you can expect high-quality wooden modern furniture pieces to come out of them. Furthermore, pieces made from hardwood are air dried and removed of all moisture by kiln drying.
Softwoods, on the other hand, are prone to damage like scratches and dents, though you still can find several high-quality furniture pieces made from such wood. Examples of these are pine, redwood, fir and cedar.
Construction
It’s important to determine the construction of the furniture piece you're about to purchase. The construction of the piece will likely identify the overall appearance, function and even life. High-quality constructed pieces are sturdy and tend to last longer than its counterparts.
There are several types of joints used for creating furniture, and two of the most popular are dovetails, and mortise and tenon. You may also stumble upon pieces that are joined by screws or dowels. If you’re looking for extra strength, opt for pieces with additional corner blocks.
Finish
The final consideration you should look out for is finish. What you must know is that any quality piece must go through three crucial processes: sanding, staining and finishing. Sanding will provide the furniture with a smooth surface and even imperfections to the wood, which adds to the overall appeal.
Staining, on the other hand, is used to improve the look of the wood and add color to it. You can judge a quality piece by the way it was stained; pieces that undergone good staining don’t contain any dark spots
Finishing is the last stage of the process, which will provide the wooden modern furniture with either a high gloss or matte finish. When judging the quality of the finish, always look for a satin, smooth finish. There shouldn’t be any bubble or rough spots. Furthermore, all the parts, including the underside, must be finished.
