Twin, full, queen & king are all terms we’re familiar with. These are the standard sizes used throughout the bedding industry and are typically the most available. For most folks queen & king size beds tend to be the most popular sizes not because of the width of these beds but because of the length. Queen and king size mattresses are 80 inches long or 6 feet 8 inches long. This works great for many homes but what about the individual who can’t fit a queen or king bed in the space. Twin and full sizes are less wide but not long enough for taller people who enjoy the length of the queen and king mattresses. Is there an alternative available? There is in the way of extra long beds.
Extra long beds exist for the simple purpose of taking a standard size like a twin or full size and making it longer for taller individuals. This used to be a custom size in the industry but many manufacturers are starting to offer bed frames and mattresses standard in XL bed sizes much to the delight of those who needed something as long as a queen bed but in the width of a twin or full size bed. These longer sizes are often referred to as twin xl, full xl or twin extra long and or full extra long bed sizes.
Standard twin size mattresses measure 39 inches by 75 inches long. When looking at a twin extra long mattress it will measure 39 inches by 80 inches long. Standard full size mattresses measure 54 inches by 75 inches long. Full size extra long mattresses will measure 54 inches by 80 inches long. Five inches of length may not seem like much to many of us but it’s quite a difference to someone who is 6 feet tall compared to someone who is 6 feet 6 inches tall.
Besides twin xl and full xl bed frames and mattresses another size exists that provides additional length above and beyond 80 inches. California king is another size considered extra long and varies somewhat from it’s standard king counterpart. Where as regular king mattresses measure around 76 inches by 80 inches long. California king mattresses measure 72 inches by 85 inches long. That length is 7 feet 1 inches long! More than enough length for the majority of us who are looking for a longer bed.
More often than not these longer sizes are accomplished by using longer rails with existing headboards. Some of these beds use a center support rail and this too is made longer in keeping with the length of the extra long side rails. California king beds however often require a different width headboard since the width between a standard king and a California king bed is off by about 4 inches. Some manufacturers can work around this by designing rails that can move in towards the correct width of the California king bed but often the headboard itself will be designed specifically for the cal king size.
In this article we examined what extra long beds are and who they can benefit the most. We discussed twin xl and full xl bed sizes and looked at the differences in dimensions from standard beds compared to extra long sizes. I also presented another option in this article referred to as California king or cal king size beds and mattresses. These provide a maximum bed length over 7 feet which puts it as the longest bed available in the standard bedding industry.
