I am one to take precautions. I look around me to see who or what is there. I try to be aware of my surroundings. I try to stay in familiar territory so that I don’t get lost in the wrong place.
Unfortunately, even with the best precautions, things can happen. Take the day I was shopping with a friend in another country. We had gone to the marketplace and had a lovely morning. I had already been warned not to wear a purse – especially one with a strap, so I didn’t. However, she and I had bought a lot of gifts and other items and were loaded down with shopping bags.
As we were walking toward the streetcar, we noticed three young men following us. It became quite obvious once we had ducked in and out of stores to get rid of them. At first, we weren’t sure that they were after us, but eventually, after walking several blocks, we were certain.
We sped up and they sped up. We finally reached the trolley stop these individuals were right on our heels. I remember yelling for my friend to jump onto the trolley that was about to pull away. Since she was in her sixties, this was no easy feat, however we had no choice. We jumped and made it, leaving the perpetrators in the dust on the sidewalk.
This happened a number of years ago, before pepper spray was available to the public. If this situation was to happen today, I would handle it much differently. First of all, I would have been carrying Pepper Spray Mace, and I would have used it. It would have kept me from having to run all those blocks with my sixty-something-year-old friend behind me huffing and puffing and we wouldn’t have had to jump on the wrong trolley and end up some place where we weren’t planning to go and didn’t know how to get back from!
We did finally get back. Our feet were killing us and we were still shaking. I decided that I would not allow myself to go through that again. I now really do use Pepper Spray Mace. I carry it in my purse wherever I go. It makes me feel safer, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to stay safe, but do it in an effective, non-lethal way.
