It wasn’t too long ago when you would hear that a suspect had been fatally shot by police using a revolver. Because so many fatalities were occurring, many police departments across the country started using non-lethal tasers instead. First there were pilot programs and training to see how this idea would work out. Eventually, the pilot programs became permanent programs in many departments because the outcome was so much better for the officers, the perpetrators and the community.
Because non-lethal tasers are effective enough to stop the perpetrator in their tracks, they are an excellent alternative to firearms, which, too many times have resulted in fatalities – even when that was not the intention.
An example of using non-lethal tasers effectively and correctly took place in Florida on May 8, 2008. WFTV reported that a suspect along with his wife hi-jacked a car and led police on a chase into another county nearby to where the car was stolen from. After a chase in the surrounding area, the car seemed to run out of gas, so the suspects jumped out and tried to get away on foot. Deputies in unmarked SUV’s pulled up and chased the couple and eventually a deputy tasered the young man, who immediately fell to the ground.
The proof that he was not seriously injured by the non-lethal taser is that the young man was talking normally and saying that his wife had not done anything and she should not be held responsible. The young man had been subdued and captured, but he was not injured or dead, and had his wits about him enough so that he could carry on a conversation.
