What exactly is an evergreen plant? In its simplest term it is a plant, tree or shrub that has leaves all year round. This category of plant comes in a number of different shapes, sizes and heights. Each evergreen plant has its own unique characteristics, and can fit perfectly into a landscape like a piece of a puzzle. Evergreen plants can be used as ground covers, shrubs, flowering plants and trees. Lets take a look at a few options you have available.
If you want a ground cover to fill in an open or bare space the juniper will fit the bill. This evergreen grows no taller than 8 inches when mature. Its color is a beautiful blue/green, which has a tint of purple during the winter
Evergreens that flower
The Crape myrtle is an evergreen plant that flowers each year. In Florida these small trees line up along streets and highways. The plant flowers in the colors of pink, red, and white. The Muskogee Crape Myrtle is an especially attractive variety. The leaves are a deep green and the flowers are lavender in color.
Shrubs
The Snowmound is an evergreen shrub that makes a great addition to any landscape. It has bluish green leaves that sprout snow white, which is where it got its name. The golden barberry has beautiful yellow leaves that will remain that color as long as it receives sufficient sunlight.
Trellis grown plants
Do you want an evergreen plant that will grow along a fence or trellis? The Carolina jessamine is one such plant. It is a strong vine that will grow on and over anything in its path. An added bonus is its fragrant, yellow flowers that bloom at the first sign of spring.
If you have decided to transform your yard into a place to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, evergreen plants, ground covers and flowering shrubs make a great choice.
