Buffalo Grass Seed: The Easiest Grass To Grow

There is a special kind of grass that has grown wild on the Great Plains for many years. It is called buffalo grass. This grass has adapted to extreme changes of temperature, and it is strong and durable. It needs very little moisture to thrive and stay green. Buffalo grass seed produces a durable, easy to maintain grass cover.

Buffalo grass turns green two to three weeks later than many other types of grass. It stays green all summer long with only a little water. When it stops growing and becomes dormant in the fall, it turns a light beige color until the following spring.

By using potassium nitrate, a person can cause this grass to germinate quickly. It will only take up to fourteen days. Another incredible characteristic of Buffalo grass is that from the time of planting, it can grow 5 inches before 50 days pass. It spreads and thickens by sending out runners like strawberry plants do. All of these things make it a relatively fast grass cover.

This grass is often used for erosion control by road construction companies and home builders. It needs six to eight hours of sunlight and well-drained soil. It is very important that buffalo grass receive direct morning sunlight. It does extremely well in hot, dry places where many other grasses die out.

Scientists are constantly looking for ways to better seeds, and they have made a seed for buffalo grass that produces a thicker and more dense grass. The reason is that it produces more plants whose roots are closer together. It is a convenient and easy grass to use because it needs less maintenance, it covers the area where it is planted faster than other grasses and it keeps weeds out.

Buffalo grass favors soils that aren't based on coarse sand, however, they will work on that kind of soil if organic materials are added. It prefers a soil PH of 6. 0 to 7. 5. Buffalo grass seed can be planted from mid spring through the last part of summer. The ground temperature must reach 60 degrees in the spring before it can be planted, and it can't be planted any later in the summer than 75 days before the average heavy frost date.

In order to prepare the ground for planting, till it to a depth of six to twelve inches. Once this is done, the ground should be worked until the ground is well broken up and clod free. This will allow the roots to be good and healthy as the grass establishes itself. Rake the surface of the ground and remove any large weed debris. Once the soil is prepared to this point, it needs to be firmed with a roller so that your foot doesn't sink more than one-half inch.

Once the ground is well prepared, it is time to seed it. Small areas can be done by broadcasting the seed across the surface of the ground. The most important thing to remember about buffalo grass is not to seed it more than one-half inch deep. The ideal depth is between one-fourth and one-half inch.

Buffalo grass seed is simple to use in every way. It doesn't need special ground preparation, it germinates fast and it's easy to maintain once it comes up. It will give you a thick, green grass cover faster than any other type of grass seed.
