Choosing a Mint for Your Container Garden - Apartment Container Garden, Gardening, Mojito

Mint. The very word strikes fear into the hearts of gardeners around the world. Visions of a Little Shop of Horrors-like world, where the plants have taken over the world, abound. Why all this hysteria? Well, mint has a bad reputation.

Mint is a perennial that spreads primarily through "runners," or roots that grow horizontally until they pop up and start a new plant, much how grass grows. These runners make mint difficult to contain and it can quickly spread through an entire garden, lawn, or neighborhood. Many gardeners won't even attempt to grow mint.

This makes mint ideal for container gardening. If there is no surrounding soil for the runners to grow into, the mint can't spread. The branches can take root if they happen to rest on soil, so watch out for them!

There are many flavors of mint. Sometimes the flavors don't transfer to the seeds a plant produces. If you have a friend with mint you really like, ask if you can have a division of it for yourself. This will ensure you're getting the same flavor.

Fresh mint is great for cooking. Look for recipes using mint such as minted peas, minted potatoes, lamb with mint sauce and, of course, mojitos:

Basic Mojito
3 sprigs fresh mint
2 teaspoons sugar
3 tablespoons lemon juice or 3 tablespoons lime juice, fresh
1 1/2 ounces light rum
club soda, chilled

In a tall thin glass, crush or muddle part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with the club soda (or seltzer). Add a lime or lemon slice and the remaining mint. Serve
