Feeding Your Venus Flytrap

Posted: Aug 08, 2009 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135 | Bookmark and Share

Let's face it, most of us buy a venus flytrap to watch it eat bugs.  Venus flytrap plants are fun for everyone.  People are drawn to the plant as soon as they realize what it is. As interesting and fun as the plant is to feed, there are some guidelines to follow to ensure the plant stays happy and healthy.

Your venus flytrap could survive without the addition of bugs. If you provide fertilized soil, water and just the right amount of sunshine, the flytrap can continue to grow.  But, why not save money on the fertilizer and find some flies or spiders. That is much more fun!

Here are some of the bugs your flytrap can eat:

1.  flies

2.  spiders

3.  crickets

Do not feed your venus flytrap any of the following:

1.  caterpillars (they like to chew and can chew on the trap)

2.  butterflies and moths

3.  beetles or any other hard-shelled bug

The bugs you provide for your flytrap must be alive. Live bugs will wiggle in the trap and this will stimulate the hairs inside the trap. This is the signal to the trap to close completely.

If your bugs are not alive, you can imitate life by gently moving the bug around.

When the venus flytrap plant has gotten all of the nutrients it needs from it's  bug meal, it will open and let the bug fall out or blow away. You do not need to feed it immediately.  Venus flytrap plants can go months without food. Although, you should be able to feed it a live bug monthly without any problems.
