OK, I Give in... What's Are Rose Tree Gardens?

"Say What"

Those are most likely the words you’ll hear if you tell someone who loves roses that they came from rose tree gardens.

It is widely known that roses grow in bushes, shrubs or climbing plants, but what a lot of people don’t know, some come from rose tree gardens. If you are one of those people who have no idea that such a plant, or garden, exists, read on.

Yep… this type of garden is full of rose trees, no surprise there!

But what are they?

They are basically rose bushes atop long stems that give them an appearance of being a tree. They have three specific elements that make it up.

First is a rootstock that is grafted at the bottom of a central stem, and then there is the stem itself that makes the plant give off the impression of being a miniature tree, and finally the rose bush that is grafted on top of the stem.

Since a rose bush placed on top of a stem would seem flimsy, you are correct. Which is why a stake often supports central stems until the stem itself develops a sturdy frame to hold the weight of the rose bush.

Being grafted plants, they’re not something you would find in nature.

This means they’re not “true rose variety.” Developed during the mid-Victorian era in Europe by noblemen, the plant is not a naturally occurring plant, therefore denying it the label of being a “true rose” plant.

Though grafting is used to make a rose tree, not everyone who knows how to graft, can make them.

If you are looking to make your own rose tree gardens, it is better to purchase the plants from a respectable nursery and not try to make them yourself. This is strongly suggested to first time owners and enthusiasts since the process of making these magnificent plants involves special grafting techniques not widely known.

Rose tree gardens will consist of 32 to 36 inch trees, or “rose standards.” Though there is a type of plant that is called a “patio tree rose,” but with a shorter height of about 24 inches.

These are basically mini rose trees, chosen by gardeners because of their relative ease of care in winter.

This is because they’re vulnerable in the parts where grafting has occurred, and this makes them vulnerable in the wintertime. Unlike normal rose plants where you can cover them with leaves or mulch, rose trees require a wire frame cage to cover them completely, then filled with leaves and mulch.

Of course, the higher the plant, the more difficult it is to take care of them.

Try to remember all this and do more research if you plan to build your own rose tree gardens. With the proper care and attention, you will feel blessed with the beauty these special garden plants offer.
