Help in Identifying a spider.
By: Beth | 19-06-2008
We have these spiders that are in our pool sometimes.  I try not to get too close, but they seem to be either black or very dark brown in color. They usually seem to come in at night, but can also be found during the day, not always a rule of thumb though.  I cannot seem to find where they come from.  They may live under the cement of our inground pool, but I cannot be sure. I don't see them "attack" other bugs in the pool to eat.  They do carry  their babies on their back and can litterally "run" across the water.  I watched them do this and they use the very tips of their legs when running.  The water can be calm or wavy.  It does not seem to matter to them.  I don't see any other markings on them to help identify.  You can't drown them, as I have tried.  They seem to like going underwater and can stay under for quite some time.  The only way to kill them is to smash them and that is hard as they can move very fast! They are also very large!  They don't seem to be afraid of people either and will come at you when you are swimming!  Can someone help to tell me what they are?  They DO NOT look like fishing spiders as I have looked at many pictures of those.  These things are A LOT more round in the belly area, not flat.  They do have very hairy legs.  We do live next to a farmers field and close to Lake Erie in Oregon, Ohio if that helps.
