Plastic trough planters

Stone, granite or wooden trough planters can be extremely heavy and very costly to buy.  An alternative is the plastic trough planter, which provides a great way of adding colour to your garden on a budget.

Trough planters are perfect for herb gardens or small flower displays.  Troughs allow more space than little pots and planters, and allow you to grow more demanding plants or combine a selection of flora.

Due to a trough planter's shape and size they look great on window ledges and sit neatly at the side of pathways. They also save the need for lots of little planters and pots, and so reducing clutter.

Plastic planters come in a range of designs, some are strong and look elegant.  Others might be a flimsy and look a little cheap.  A trick to making plastic planters look like a great garden feature is to blend them in with their environment, making the most of the plants themselves rather than the pot.

Go for a neutral colour, that will blend in well, and ensure that the other materials used around it are natural, such as pebbles or wood chippings. The great thing about plastic is that it comes in a whole host of colours, so you should be able to find something that blends well.

Plants that hang down over the pot are a good idea, such as ivy.  Go for upright plants in the centre, though, as this will give your pot the effect of being really full of colour and life.  Consider adding decorative garden ornaments such as butterflies or toadstalls to create a more interesting display.

Remember when placing your pots to raise them off the floor, to allow for drainage.  All plants must be allowed to properly drain after watering.  A good tip is to add broken pottery or pebbles to the bottom of the trough, which will allow the water to drain but retains the soil.

Although plastic planters are less heavy than other materials, they are still heavy when full of compost and water.  If you want your troughs to be mobile, consider a plant caddy.

Plastic troughs are a great way of injecting some life into your garden, courtyard or balcony.

For much of the last century Hemp was vilified for its reputation synonymous with Cannabis, and, unfortunately, the fear campaign waged by western politics pigeon-holed a crop of high economic potential, as a dangerous and dissident drug. Aside from its superiority in the categories of durability, longevity and cost effectiveness, the hemp crop has one of the most varied lists of applications of any commercial crop.
