Reasons for non flowering
1)lack of sunlight
Sunlight is the energy source by which plants make new growth such as flowers. Some plants are adapted to low light levels because they live in woodland but some are from habitats where they require a large amount of sunlight. In the Uk we have a low light intensity because the gulf stream brings so much grey sky. Therefore it is important to place many plants in full sun which is generally found best on a south facing slope but west facing areas also have the hot afternoon sun which can also be good.
For example, pelargoniums are found in the fynbos-by there botany they are adapted to the long hours of sunlight found on the cape in south africa with its mediterraenean climate. Therefore to place this plant in a north facing garden in london would be a disaster and it will not flower.Similar problems occur when lavender, that most english of plants, is used by gardeners in the most unpromising of situations-the amount of times I have ripped out leggy lavender is a little silly.dont use lavender in a shaded garden!
2)nutrition
Plants have three major elements which they require.very basicallly nitrogen increases leafy growth, phosphurus increases root growth and potassium increases flower and fruit formation. Therefore in april just before a typical english garden reaches its peak it would be good to begin a regime of adding a high potassium fertlizer to plants that you want to flower.tomato fertilizer is typically used but bat poo is very effective also.
3)restricted root growth
when plants are grown in containers sometimes if the pot is too small the root system is so restricted that it cannot obtain the nutrients it requires to function normally.
4)excessive pruning and excessive nitrogen application
pruning plants very hard can result in it putting on excess vegetative growth at the expense of flowers.similarly adding high nitrogen fertilzer has a similar effect.
5)pruning at the wrong time
there are basically three times at which plants should be pruned.Spring flowering plants should be pruned after flowering, summer flowering plants should be pruned in the spring and there are some plants that should be pruned in the winter when they are dormant.
IF you prune lilac which flowers in may in september you will cut off all the buds and it will not flower next year.
these are all the reasons that immediately come to mind but there are others such as pest and disease attacks such as earwigs eating flowers or mildew inhibiting flowering.
