Safety Measures in Handling Carbon Monoxide in Fireplaces

Carbon Monoxide (CO) if trapped in a fireplace is very hazardous. This combination of elements creates an unscented, colorless, tasteless, non-irritating and poisonous gas. Because of these characteristics, detection of Carbon Monoxide is very difficult. It can already make severe damage even before anyone can know that it is already in their house.  Combustion from organic matter with not enough oxygen sources would result for the formation of Carbon Monoxide.  Therefore, vehicles, heaters and cooking apparatus, can be primary resource of this fatal gas. Inhalation would be the start of poisoning. Familiar and accessible starting place of this gas resulted to make it the most common type of fatal poisoning in numerous countries.  Thus, prevention to this deadly gas should be implemented in households.

Preventive Measures include:

A Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector should be located in places near any fuel burning equipments or appliances. It should be properly positioned.

Make sure that combustion equipments are properly maintained and adjusted. Consult with professionals to know the right adjustments if you don’t have enough knowledge on the machines.  This could also prevent any unknown leaks or problems in the heating systems resulting to poisoning.

The fireplace damper should be left open until the ashes have cooled. This is because if combustion is still taking place, residue can be trapped inside the house and result to possible inhalation.

Have an exhaust fan located near stoves to assure that gases formed can be vented outside the house.

A chimney that is not properly maintained and have a clog could lock in Carbon Monoxide gas. To avoid this, always have a regular check up to see any defects and have appropriate actions immediately.

Never leave a car idle inside the garage since it can be a source of the gas. For more information about fireplace parts visit: ibuyfireplaceparts.com.
