Growing medicinal herbs is just as easy as any other kind of herb. It does not take someone who is experienced at gardening to produce a successful garden. Herbs are some of the most forgiving plants to grow and require little in the way of maintenance. Most herbs tend to do worse when they are paid too much attention. This is good news for the beginning gardener, or the person on the go. Checking in on your plants once a day is usually sufficient.
One of the easiest medicinal herbs to grow is one that is usually pulled as a weed. The dandelion has been found to be beneficial to the liver, digestion and is an antioxidant. If planting these, you will want to contain them separate from the rest of the garden. Plant them at least one foot apart. This is because you want to grow large, strong roots. The roots are the part of the dandelion you want to use when making medicine. The chemical in the root is more potent in larger roots.
Chamomile is a very common plant used by those growing medicinal herbs. This plant prefers full sunlight. It grows very easily and is easy to tend to. It requires light watering and very little room between seed placement. When using chamomile, the flower is what is steeped into teas. Protect the flowers from any pesticides of chemicals in order to protect your health. This plant is used for many different ailments from indigestion to anxiety. It is a great way to help those who suffer from insomnia. Because it is so easy to grow and so beneficial, it is found in most every medicinal herb garden.
Another very common plant for those growing medicinal herbs is mint. Of the mint varieties, the peppermint is the most prized for herbal medication. The plant itself is regarded as invasive because of it's tendency to take over a garden. Simply containing this herb in it's own pot can help reduce this problem. Having mint on hand is good for chewing after meals to aid in digestion. Using mint in a tea is a good way to give a natural boost of energy without the need for caffeine.
Growing medicinal herbs allows you to explore herbs you would not normally encounter. The plantain is an herb most people have not heard of. Most people have heard of the fruit, but this is something different. This perennial grows quite easily. It is very beneficial in helping with cuts, bruises and even abscessed teeth. The most common way to use the herb is to crush it into a paste and put it on the wound. It will take away the sting and help in the healing process. Used in a bath it can even help for those afflicted with chicken pox or poison ivy.
The favorite for most growing medicinal herbs is lavender. Merely the scent of this herb helps to calm nerves. Lavender is a perennial plant and must be contained in it's own pot. It will take over a garden very easily. Besides being used in aromatherapy, lavender is used in teas and lotions. There are many popular products on the market from soaps to lotions, which use the scent of lavender. You can use it every day in order to lead a more stress free life.
