Tree Planting In Florida

If you're looking to plant a tree that is native to Florida on your property, consider the Florida State Palm, also known as the Cabbage or Sabal Palm. This is a popular tree choice in the Florida area and a favorite of many homeowners. The plant material of the Sabal Palm thrives in the Florida climate, and is able to endure hurricane conditions quite well, it also requires very little maintenance.

In Florida, when contractors plant new palm trees, they usually arrive with hardly any root structure, hurricane cut, and root pruned straight out of the field. The tree may come with a larger root, however.

If you decide to plant this tree, note that when it arrives it can appear surprisingly dry. But don't worry, after planting, the tree should have a full canopy of leaves within a year. Normally a landscaper will prune all the leaves off so there is no transpiration soon after it's planted, to avoid stressing the tree too much. This tree is perfect for Florida's hurricane prone climate because it takes a lot to knock it down - it is one of the highest wind resistant trees in Florida and the most planted in the state.

Florida palm trees are adaptable to the soil even though it is not the most amenable to planting. Again, this is the benefit of planting local trees on your property.

When planting a tree for the first time, leave plenty of space around the root ball for filler soil - this will allow the tender feeder roots to develop around the tree. If you do so, the roots will come out strong and stabilize the trunk, keeping it sturdy and able to withstand high winds, even in hurricane conditions.

A good idea if you want to plant a row of palm trees on your property is to plant some green hedges along the bottom of the row as well, to create more privacy without the installation of a fence. The Podocarpus plant is a good recommendation. Of course, palm trees don't provide much coverage, so this is a good way to create more greenery around the bottom of the trunks. These hedges have a tendency to grow up instead of out, and are easily maintained with simple tip pruning a few times a year.

Crotons are a beautiful choice as well, although not native to Florida. Low maintenance, they only require small amounts of water, fertilizer, and are resistant to pests. This plant has been known to grow quite large, so if you are looking for something that will create a big impact and take up a large space, this may be a good idea.

Before planting anything in your yard, it's recommended that you plan out your landscape beforehand and then mark down where each plant will go before you dig any holes. This way, the actual planting will go much more smoothly and quicker - and you'll be less likely to make major mistakes.
