What You Need to Get Your Log Cabin Built Properly

For many people it is a dream to one day own a log cabin.  Log cabins are beautifully built structures that are becoming more and more common in both rural and suburban areas.  Typically you will find these homes being built from pre-milled logs and kits.  It makes it far easier on the builder.

Before you do anything, the first step to getting started is to have a set plan.  You want to have every little detail planned out.  Know how big of a cabin you want, what kinds of materials you will use, and approximately how much it is going to cost.  While your plan can change slightly along the way, having a set plan to start will make things go over much smoother.

The next step is to research in-depth.  Go onto construction sites and home improvement sites such as Home Depot and Lowe’s to get quotes.  This will give you a better understanding of how much material and how big of a log cabin you can build with the money you have to work with.

Take the time to look at what kinds of home plans and kits that is available on the market.  While researching this, you will find there are builders and kits that focus specifically on constructing log cabins.  If you do not find what you are looking for, many of these builders can recommend other places to research and other possibilities to consider.

As always, the internet is always a great source to research plans on your own.  There are a number of sites you can go to get information and potential building plans for your cabin.

Once you have an idea of how big of a cabin you will be constructing, start thinking about the location you intend on building at.  This can also make a difference on how large of a cabin you build.  If you have a minimal amount of space to work with, you are probably not going to be able to build the mansion of a cabin you had hoped for.  In addition to square footage, you should also look into the privacy and access to amenities such as water and power from this location.

An important decision you should be thinking about the entire way through is whether you are going to build the cabin yourself or hire someone to do it for you.  This is where you will want to do a great deal of research.  Get as many quotes as possible based on the size of cabin you intend on building and the material they recommend.  If at all possible, it can be useful to look at testimonials and ask friends as well.

The next task you probably do not want to deal with but must be taken care of is looking into building permits and building inspections.  All requirements vary from county to county making it vital you do the necessary research.  It can be more of a pain than the actual building process, but these are steps you must take.

As mentioned above, part of the planning process is determining how you will get water and heat in the area you are in.  Wood burning stoves and furnaces have become increasingly popular recently.  They tend to be practical, efficient, and rather inexpensive.

The last thing you will want to look into is getting quotes to finish the insides of your log cabin.  Unless you intend on doing much of the work on your own, you will want to get quotes from plumber’s roofers, electricians and anything else you feel is necessary.

There is a lot that goes into getting a log cabin built for you.  Following the steps in this article will allow you to get the cabin you have always dreamed of built efficiently.
