Using Texas Birth Records to Track Your Heritage

If you’re interested in your family genealogy and have found parts of your family tree rooted in the state of Texas then it may be worth looking into using public Texas birth records to fill in any missing branches. These records are freely available but the problem is finding them in a timely manner.

First off let’s take a look at how birth records can be a good starting point for finding out about your family heritage. By starting at the beginning of someone’s life you can not only find out about their life but you can also work you way backwards into the past, finding out valuable information about family members who came before them.

There are three pieces of information on a Texas birth certificate that make this possible. The fathers name, the mother name, and city in which you or other family members were born. By back tracking using this information you can find out more about them and start filling in those missing family tree branches.

So how do you find birth records in the state of Texas? The Texas Department of Health Services Vital Statistics Division is the keeper of these records. You can make a request through their website for your own or immediate family members birth information. There is a $20 fee which is non-refundable even if your search returns no information. If a birth record is found it will take an additional 10-15 days to process the order before it is sent for delivery.

There is a second alternative but it too will cost a little money but the results will be much faster. Using an online data search service will run in the $20-$40 range but these services allow you to run multiple queries that return results in a matter of seconds’ right to your computer screen.

These services cast a wide net and allow you to not only search for Texas birth records but also birth record information for other states as well. For filling in those missing branches it’s hard to beat the large amount of information returned by an online data search service.
