A great way to establish good will and long business relationships is by using promotional gifts. I was a pharmaceutical rep for over 20 years. Our company had fine products and that was a plus of course. But we also had a marketing unit that knew the advantage of visiting a customer with a gift in hand. I worked for two companies. The first company did not understand this.
Fortunately for me the second company did know this. Without a gift in hand I had trouble seeing the people who made the sales decisions. My decision makers were the doctors and nurses who could recommend my products to their patients. I needed time with these people to let them know I had the best products for their patients.
So when I came with a desk calendar in hand for my customer I knew I would have a few minutes of their time. They all knew when I showed up it was gift time. I did of course mix my product message with my gift hand outs. I have to say the nurses loved me for my gifts not for my looks.
Each time I visited the hospital I had a bag of promotional gifts for the nursing staff. Coffee mugs, nice ink pens, lavalieres for their name badges. Everything had our company name and a promotional message written on them of course. I never left a hospital with any gifts. I gave out everything I took in. And I wanted to get rid of the gifts because the home office would be sending in more next week. If I did not give it out, it would build up in my garage.
I had to constantly give out the gifts. Which was all right. I would rather get too man gifts rather than not enough. The gifts separated me from my competition. I cannot tell what effect the gifts had on my sales.
However, if a nurse had the chance to talk to a patient about product, she would more likely recommend my company because she might be holding a nice pen I had given her.
No matter the type of business you are in realize that one overlooked promotional gift is food. You can never know how far a box of donuts can take you. They might be only office workers. But someday one of them might be the buyer of your company products. These office staffers are always getting promoted. And when he or she does, they will remember your kind donut gesture.
If you have the budget throw an office lunch once every quarter. Have a nice lunch catered in. Mix the meal with a short product DVD presentation. Do not make it about your presentation. But have something so the people remember who bought the lunch. If they have questions later about your products fine, address them. But keep it low key. At the end thank them for their attendance. They will remember you fondly for months to come. Try this week using promotional gifts to build your sales.
