Do you feel you are in control of your money? Are you able to save a portion of your money every month to go towards your retirement? Most people would say they can't spare any extra funds at the present time, but will eventually look at starting a savings plan. With the recent downturn of the nation's economy, it becomes even more of a challenge to invest money for the future. So, are you really in control of your money? Now is the time to take a long, serious look at budgeting your income and taking the necessary steps to provide for your retirement tomorrow.
Here are some actions to take in order to budget wisely and take control of your money:
- Getting out of debt
If you have credit card debt and many of us do, you need to immediately reduce your interest rate and always pay more than the minimum payment due amount. This is the only way to eventually pay off your debt and free up funds for your savings plan.
- Cutting down on monthly expenses
Make a list of your monthly purchases, utilities and household expenses. Look for ways to reduce these expenses. You are probably paying for services you no longer need. For instance, do you really need all of those cable channels? You probably just watch a certain few of them anyway. Do you really need a second phone line? What purpose does it serve by keeping it? What about the gym membership that you thought was so urgent at the beginning of the year when you made your new year's resolution, but no longer seem to use. Check your bills and credit cards statements to see if there are any services you can reduce or eliminate altogether.
- Paying bills timely
Make sure you pay all of your bills on time in order to keep from having late fees to pay. This can add up to be a costly amount. You may be able to have some payments automatically deducted from your bank account. You can also pay electronically as a fast and free payment option. Budget for all of your monthly expenses and be sure to anticipate payments that will need to be paid quarterly and annually.
- Staying motivated and in control daily
Everyday remember to find ways to be in control of your spending. Develop new thrifty habits. Look at your daily routine to see if changes can be made. Do you really need to eat out everyday for lunch or can you bring lunch from home occasionally? Discuss with other family members and make it a priority to cut back and save a few dollars everyday. One of these days you'll be glad you did!
