The only place to find a golf course in all of Minorca is the beautiful resort of Son Parc. Son Parc is located on the northern coast of Menorca, about 20km west of Mahon, 7km east of Fornells, and only a 20 minutes Minorca's Mahon airport.
The ever-expanding resort is building more apartments to the south of the golf course. These apartments are no doubt being built to house more visitors and help keep the beautiful golf course the center of attention. Son Parc is an excellent resort for the hard core golf enthusiast or for families who want to learn how to play.
Son Parc resort's golf course is a beautifully laid out, full 18-hole golf course. Originally starting out as a 9-hole golf course, it was extended to 14 holes in 2003. Work continued for the next three years, bringing the full 18 holes to completion in spring 2006. It was still another year before the turf was up to the required standard to open the full course to visitors. The full 18-hole course was officially opened in August 2006 with a great amount of assistance from Dave Thomas Golf Ltd.
Thomas is a former Ryder Cup player who has designed many of the top golf courses in the world. Some of his most famous creations include The Belfry courses and San Roque on the Costa del Sol. Thomas' company has also redesigned the original nine holes to help bring all 18 holes to the same level of quality and design.
The developers of Son Parc golf course take great pride in their ability to maintain a level of environmental safety that others often overlook. They have replanted vegetation that naturally grows in Menorca and left many rocks in their original places. The irrigation system is run entirely from rain and treated water. No fresh water is used from water mains or wells for the irrigation of the golf course.
The Son Parc golf course features sand traps, beautiful greens, a lovely surrounding landscape, and a flock of peacocks that live just behind the third green. The peacock family is very accepting of humans and enjoys rewarding golfers with an extra show of color from time to time. Their extraordinary, natural touch lends an air of exotic beauty to the already lush landscape.
The golf course is only one of the attractions that make Son Parc a must-see travel destination. Outside the course are lovely white sand beaches and coves, perfect for a family gathering, private party or romantic getaway. Surrounding the course are heavily wooded hills and a wide variety of bird species, perfect for the bird-watcher. Menorca's highest point, Monte Toro, looms in the distance overlooking the golf course and beaches.
Millions of people visit Menorca every year and enjoy everything the Mediterranean island has to offer. No visit to Menorca should be considered complete until a special trip has been made to Son Parc. Even if it is just to see the peacocks.
