This beautiful county was formed in 1889, but it has a rich history spanning from long before this year. Native tribes, including the nations of Tongva, which means "people of the earth," as well as the Juaneno, who were named after Mission San Juan Capistrano by the priests there, and the Luiseno, who were given this name by the priests because of their location near the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, lived here long before European settlers arrived. After Spain claimed the land and built a series of missions in the area, in 1887 settlers discovered that the Santa Ana mountains held silver, which led to many more settlers traveling out to the area on the railroads to seek their fortunes. Because of the great number of people coming to the region, the California government decided to create Orange County as separate from Los Angeles County, and the county was named for the citrus crop that grows so well there.
Orange County makes a great vacation destination because it is home to both Disneyland, which opened in 1955, and Knott's Berry Farm, which officially opened as an amusement park in 1968.
