One of the most difficult shots rookie golfers have to play is the one from about seven yards from the flag. If you are off the green, it might not always be possible or desirable to play the putter from this position. I ask myself how often would I expect to have the ball finish within 12 inches of the cup from this range. Not many I can tell you, because I am not a professional golfer.
However, there is a way to play these delicate little chip shots just like a pro.
Here is how to play them.
You can use any choice of club, within the range of a pitching wedge through to an 8 iron.
1. Address the ball as you would a putt and use your putting grip to play this shot. Choke down on the grip for more control.
2. Have the hands slightly ahead of the ball, and play the shot as you would your putter, that is with the hands and arms, keeping the hands in front of the ball through the shot.
Playing the chip shot this way with the hands and arms, gives you the advantage of playing it consistently, because of the lack of wrist action involved in the shot. You will also develop a feel for distances, which is very important with this type of golf shot, and it is one to practice regularly as it can save you many wasted shots in a round of golf.
It's best to experiment with the shot, as it might feel strange at first, and try to find out what works best for you.

Why Can't I Hit The Golf Ball Longer With My Driver
By: Philip | 04/11/2009 | GolfOne of the most common problems those new to the game of golf have is the shortage of distance off the tee with the driver. I mean, the ball barely makes two hundred yards off the tee, which means it leaves a lot of golf to play to make the green for a par. Often the most frequent question handicap golfers ask their buddies after a round of golf is why can't I hit the golf ball longer with my driver?
How To Straighten A Golf Slice
By: Philip | 04/11/2009 | GolfAre you getting tired of living with the golf slice which does not want to go away? Every long shot you play you have to aim to the left of the target to allow for the inevitable swing of the ball to the right. Sometimes it does not curl as it usually does, instead it goes straight, but always right of the target. The trouble is, you don't know why it bends or why it goes straight? If this is you, then read on.
Curing Over the Top Golf Swing
By: Philip | 28/10/2009 | GolfThe over the top golf swing is where the golfer takes the club back too much on the inside swing plane. Almost a scythe swing pattern, sideways in its arc, rather than taking the club back on a straighter and more upright swing arc. The cause of it is an incorrect setup. Often golfers who play the over the top swing start with a closed stance, at the same time the shoulders are open.
