How to Draw and Fade the Ball at Will With Your Driver

Very few holes on a golf course are perfectly straight. Most holes dogleg left or right requiring a shot that moves with the shape of the hole. So here is a simple swing alteration you need to make to ensure that the ball moves in the same direction as the hole.

Let us first focus on the draw where the ball moves from right to left through the air. The most important part of this swing is to keep your upper right arm firmly positioned against your chest. This will cause your swing path to follow a line that moves from inside outward, imparting a right to left spin on the ball.

Here is a simple drill that you can do to keep your upper right arm against your chest. Take a folded handkerchief and place it under your right armpit between your chest and your arm. Close your right arm against your chest to hold the handkerchief in place. Start your swing and concentrate on keeping the handkerchief in that position with your upper right arm during the entire swing and do not let it fall out. If it does fall out it means that you aren't keeping your upper right arm against your chest and will consequently not draw the ball.

Now we get to the fade where the objective of the shot is to move the ball through the air from left to right. In this swing we do exactly the opposite of what we did for the draw. Place the clubhead behind the ball and focus on taking the clubhead straight backwards on the backswing. This is on the same line that you want the ball to follow immediately after impact. It is very important that you let your upper right arm move away from your chest during the backswing. Follow the same line on the downswing and move your upper right arm back toward your chest. With this swing path you will force the club to follow a line moving from outside the normal swing path to inside, consequently imparting a left to right spin on the ball making it fade.

I hope this helps you to control the ball better.
