A chipping stroke is a one-lever stroke and can play around the greens with anything from 5 iron to a sand wedge. The concept of chipping is to get the ball on the green and running like a putt. This article will show you the most common things that you should keep in mind everytime when making a chip shot.
Pick your Landing Spot
Your first step of chipping is looking at the green and select your landing area. You may want that spot to be on the putting surface. Try to avoid landing on the rough or sloping surface. Visualize your swing making perfect impact with the ball running along the putting surface toward the hole. Try to imagine the shot in your mind and then be as exact as you can with your target. You may not make it when you want to, but it helps you improve a self-confidence and it also calms you down and make you feel less nervous.
Choosing the Right Club
Your choice of club depends on the circumstances of the terrain and how you need the ball to travel. There is no particular rule on choosing the right club. If you are close to hole like 15 feet, you need a more lofted club so the ball doesn't run too much.
The 7-iron and 8-iron are the most popular clubs used when golfers need to make a chip and run shot for about 60 feet. Their clubfaces are less lofted, which gives them more accuracy as chipping tools.
Grip Pressure
Take a light grip pressure on the club. Many golfers prefer to grip down the handle to get them closer to increase their control: this has the effect of shortening the length of the club.
Lies and instinct
If you are an experienced golfer then using your instincts to chose the right club is the key. Let's say - when your ball is in the rough, you need more lofted club to get the ball high enough to escape the longer rough.
Setup
The key to chipping is setup. Creating the right positions at address is essential. You want your stance to be narrow about 12 inches from heel to heel and 80% of your weight should be on your left side. Your left shoulder should be open to the target as well. Place the ball on a line about 2 inches to the left of your right toe. During your stroke, focus on the back of your left wrist. Your left wrist must stay flat and firm throughout the swing.
Learning how to chip the ball properly is not rocket science, yet it does take practice and technique to get it right every time. Now practice your chip shot over and over, and in various terrain settings on the course. I guaranteed you will improve your chipping in no time.
