Picture yourself in the following situation. You are positioned in the middle of the fairway with about 150 yards into the green. The green is surrounded by hazards with water at the front and bunkers at the back. The pin is about 8 yards from the front of the green with about twenty yards behind the pin. You are in the perfect scoring position, but the last thing you want to do is hit the ball into one of the hazards, especially short into the water.
This is where the short iron zipper shot comes in. The shot you want to execute for this pin position is to hit the ball over the flag and spin it back between 10 and 15 yards to the front of the green next to the hole. Here are a couple of simple steps for you to follow to execute this shot accurately and successfully.
Step 1: The two most important things you should constantly be thinking about is carry and spin. You have to fly the ball over the pin and bring it back.
Step 2: Select the appropriate club to carry the ball about 165 to 170 yards. Grip the club using a weak grip allowing you to maximise the control you have over the ball.
Step 2: Position the ball in the middle of your stance and ensure that your stance is slightly narrower than usual.
Step 3: Start your backswing taking the club back at a very steep angle.
Step 4: Then proceed with your downswing on the same steep angle as your backswing and pull down hard with your hands to ensure the clubface comes down on the back of the golf ball, squeezing in into the turf and imparting the maximum backspin on the ball. Your hands must lead the club into the ball or in other words your hands should constantly stay ahead of the club.
This will help you to hit the short iron zipper shot successfully and impart a lot of backspin on the ball, getting it to land at the back of the green and spinning it back all the way towards the hole at the front. I hope this helps.
