Why You Should Aim the Putter then Align Your Body

Aiming your putter before you align your body is an essential element you should have in your game to become a better golfer. It may sound simple and obvious, but here is the reason for doing so.

As with any shot you play on the golf course, your putting stroke should have a pre-shot routine. This is absolutely critical to accurate putting. Aiming the putter towards the hole is essentially the same as aiming a gun towards a target.

First, have a look at the line you want the ball to follow from behind the ball. Once you have made up your mind about the line, move next to the ball and make a couple of practice swings. The idea behind making practice swings is to get a feel for the speed of the putt so you should try make them as close to the real stroke as you can. This is a very important factor.

When making your practice strokes aim parallel to the line of your actual putt. If you aim your practice strokes at the hole, you will carry the same putter position and body alignment into your actual putt and will consequently hit the ball to the right of the hole. This is something you definitely want to avoid.

When addressing the ball place the putter behind the ball and align it first and then align your body accordingly. If you align your body first your aiming will invariably be faulty causing you to miss more putts. Consistent, accurate aiming only comes from practice and if you practice the above routine enough it will become instinctive.
