Once the receiver has estimated the distance to at least four different satellites, then it is able to determine a three dimensional position.

At any given time, there are a minimum of 24 operational GPS satellites. Each of them is operated by the U.S. Air Force, and orbits the earth about twice per day. The ground stations are utilized in order to track the orbit of each satellite with great precision.

The GPS receiver is able to determine a satellite’s location by using the data included in the satellite’s transmission. By making an estimation as to how far the satellite is, the receiver is able to determine the location of something on the surface using an imaginary sphere that has been centered on the satellite from the ground.
