Global Positioning System (GPS) is used for navigation and accurate positioning. The system was developed by the US Department of Defense in the1970s, It was first designed so miltary personnel could accurately locate their geographic position. Nowadays the system is used also in the scientific and commercial worlds, and it has found a domestic use for consumers. It is used by airlines, and by geologists and meteorologists, to predict earthquakes or to forecast the weather.
Many people now use a GPS device of some kind while driving. If you go into an electronics or computer shop, you will see a bewildering array of them, in all shapes and sizes.
So let's say you've decided you would like to have one. How do you decide which one to choose? The first thing to look at is the extras. Do you really want them or not? Many models come with additions like Bluetooth or MP3. If you do not want these, it may be worth looking at a model with a lower price tag. Some of them have extra mapping capabilities. If you want to have these features, then you will get good value. However, if you don't need those extras, then another model will probably suit you better.
There is a very wide range of choice, so it is worth spending a bit of time shopping around. A good idea is to find out which models are currently the most popular sellers. Although this will not necessarily show you the right model for you, it is still a useful guide. Go into the local shops and check out the features on different GPS brands. The current top brands are Garmin and TomTom. Garmin is tending to be the biggest seller in North America, while TomTom has control of the European market. This situation may well change in the future.
Read reviews online. It is worth finding out what other people have said about a particular make or model. Also find out as much as you can from people you know, whose opinions you trust. If you do all these things, you should have no problem finding the right GPS device for you!
