Remember the Inspector Gadget days of your youth, when you've thought your very best (to no avail) how to design the gadget to rule them all? In these recent years, we have come close to having something like that; not quite the cure-all, but find-all, actually, to put it concisely. The GPS system is of course already getting known the world over for helping people to find their way around anywhere on earth. The device that taps into this data-rich system is called a GPS receiver. It is a hand-held computer that relies on the GPS system which is actually a team of government owned satellites called Global Positioning Satellites, crisscrossing high above the earth and continuously charting the planet. GPS devices work by using the satellites to feed it reference points that measure the user’s latitude and longitude coordinates.
Things are way more problem-free when GPS devices come equipped with screens that flash a map showing the user's precise location, what are the nearby landmarks around and how to get there. The only way that you can possibly get lost is when you waste your power supply for the GPS receiver!
Hot in pursuit of wild game, some hunters may eventually find themselves treading on unfamiliar ground. If the event is a multi-day outdoor event or excursion, the participants would definitely appreciate being able to see their current location daily on a GPS system receiver. With this very convenient tool, no one gets lost for long!
Hikers are a breed who claim the bragging right to never getting lost in the woods and even through treacherous rugged terrain. However, even this tough group of outdoorsmen can still benefit from plugging into the GPS system. What's more, most small receivers meant for the hobbyist market carry the all-crucial feature of making contact with the outside in the event of an emergency. Injured hikers or some urgent matter can send an SOS message, with their exact coordinates to boot, to guide rescue parties.
New , cutting-edge model cars are beginning to throw in a new value added service: navigation aids and instructions courtesy of GPS devices. But even as you read this not only luxury cars, but the mainstream ones too, comes from the factory sporting a dashboard screen showing the vehicle’s spot on a map diagrammed on the screen. Simple functions can be voice activated in needed and naturally will show nearby points of interests on demand. These are great for the regular driver or a professional.
Every freeway surfer would like to skip traffic even for a day, and some professional drivers, like ambulance drivers, really have the most reasons in the world to steer clear of it. Advanced GPS systems for vehicles in selected locations are capable of receiving traffic data by way of satellite radio. And there cars equipped with GPS devices that can be monitored by police in case these are stolen.
Even agriculture has benefited a lot from the technology of mainstream and very common GPS. Large commercial farms work closely to reduce costs to ever smaller amounts in order to reap the most profit, and they do this with the help of precision agriculture. Remotely-controlled equipment such as small planes for spraying crops and harvesters do not even need a human driver, as the GPS devices function with the right combination of auto pilot and GPS technology.
