Reusable name tags are badges that are blank or have just a company logo or a signifying mark of some kind. The material can be metal (aluminum or brass), Plastic pvc (credit card material or engravable or printable plastic 1/16 inch or 1/32 inch – The core of the plastic or thickest part is one color while a thin layer on the top of the badge is the other color or badge color. Logos and/or name can be applied in a few different ways: 1.Screen printing, which is using special paints and a transparent screen to push through the color to the applicable surface. 2. Hot stamping, which is a heat press with a metal die cast of the logo pressed using heat onto the material surface. 3. Thermal printing, which is usually done on a card machine similar to those used to print drivers licenses. A five color panel applies the logo one color at a time and then lays down a protective overlay; heat is also the primary source of transfer with this method. 4. Engraving, which is either rotary or laserable, etches out the surface of the material to expose the core of the plastic. Usually engraving is not done on metal for name badges.
Plastic name tags are usually created on a polystyrene or pvc style plastic, also an engraving style plastic can be used, which is a little more stylish. There are two big manufacturers of engraving style plastic (Rowmark and Innovative Plastics). Ask for either of these style plastics when ordering name badges.
Metal name tags are created on an aluminum or brass material primarily. The most used method would be thermal printing of the metal with a protective overlay. This overlay holds in the image for years. Screen printing can be used, but the image will wear over time, however the results can be nice.
Domed name tags are usually a plastic holder for a paper insert, than a clear dome style cover is snapped together with the holder. In some cases, plastic or metal can be used instead of paper.
Magnetic name tags can be any style nametags. The magnetic itself is adhered to the back of the metal or plastic name badge.
