This enables the it to penetrate the hair shaft (the cortex). The main purpose of a reconstructor is to strengthen the hair. Pack conditioners, heavy and thick, with high content of surfactants able to bind to the hair structure and "glue" the hair surface scales together. These are usually applied to the hair for longer time. The surfactants are based on long straight aliphatic chains similar to saturated fatty acids. Their molecules have tendency to crystallize easily, giving the conditioner higher viscosity, and they tend to form thicker layers on the hair surface.

If you're out of conditioner, or you want to avoid the chemicals in commercial conditioners, try using natural conditioners like mayonnaise or olive oil. Buy a separate deep or leave-in conditioner to use once a week. If your hair is fine, use it in the shower and rinse it out immediately, the way you do with normal conditioner. The drier your hair is, however, the longer you'll want to leave it in.
