Although most commonly occurring in men, many women suffer from hair loss. Similar to men, a woman's family history plays a major role in contributing to this unfortunate condition. The first signs of lost hair in women usually take place later in life and can be noticed on the top of the head.

In our society, hair loss in men is very common and is a part of our every day lives. This is not usually the case with women. In women is not widely accepted and usually leaves people not quite knowing how to react. Women suffering from loss too often feel that their condition is not taken seriously, and therefore, feel they are not accepted by family, friends or peers. Psychological studies have found that women suffering from hair loss react considerably more negatively and therefore the strain is more severe. The main reason for this reaction is that women are more invested emotionally to their hair. They feel their hair can either make them attractive or ugly. Women spend hours in a salon and at home, working on their hair.

They spend great amounts of money, arranging their hair just right. The relationship between a woman and her hair is a strong one. It can build or break their self esteem. The lack of adequate public awareness of hairloss in women in our society leaves women feeling hopeless with their condition.

Following are the most common responses researchers have found from women suffering from hair loss:

"I feel frustrated and helpless about my hairloss."
"I worry about losing even more hair."
"I worry about how my thinning hair will affect my career/marriage/dating/sexual activity."
"I feel self-conscious about my looks due to hair loss."
"I think about my hairloss all the time."
"I wish I had more hair."

Here are some tips any woman suffering from hair loss should follow:

Seek the advice of a licensed dermatologist.
Determine the cause of hair loss.
Determine the treatment process and alternatives available.
Study the process and costs of treatment.
Undergo recommended process only after consulting a dermatologist.

Surgical hair restoration should be a last resort. Only if preliminary treatments do not produced results should it be considered. A woman considering surgical hair restoration should first be deemed a good candidate by a specialist. Various studies have shown that the combination of medical treatments and surgical hair restoration have produced the best results.
