Shampoos & Body Washes are One and the Same

You’re in the middle of a shower when you find out too late that you’re out of body wash. Is it all right to use shampoo instead?

Go ahead, indulge. It really makes no difference since the two are one and the same. In fact, some products even advertise themselves as a shampoo and body wash all rolled into one.

“The truth is that shampoos and body washes are so similar that they can be used interchangeably. In fact, in the early days of body washes it was not uncommon for a company to take its shampoo formula, put it in a different bottle, change the label and call it a body wash,” according to the editors of The BeautyBrains.Com.

In what ways are the two alike? First, they contain mostly water and detergent to clean whatever part of the body they’re applied on. Many body washes, for instance, use SLS which is short for sodium laureth sulphate – a cleaning ingredient found in many shampoos as well.

“Sulfates are all primary detergents that make shampoos, body washes and other cleansers clean and foam. Without these ingredients cleansing products wouldn’t work nearly as well as they do,” explained the editors of TheBeautyBrains.Com.

Both shampoos and body washes use the same fragrance and color to make the product attractive and leave you smelling good. They also use the same conditioning ingredients.

If there are any differences at all between the two, you’ll probably find that in the detergents that are used. Since shampoos are for cleaning hair, some products may have harsher detergents than those found in body washes.

Another possible point of difference is in the conditioning ingredients used. While some shampoos may feel good on the skin, others may not because of this small difference. The bottom line:

“Shampoos clean and so do body washes. In general you’ll find it beneficial to use both a body wash and a shampoo. But there is really no reason you couldn’t use a shampoo to clean your entire body. If you use a daily moisturizer, then there is no need for a separate body wash,” concluded the editors of TheBeautyBrains.com.
