When you are fighting against hair loss you have certainly heard about DHT already. DHT is the hormone that causes hair loss. DHT blockers like the prescription drug Propecia are reducing the DHT level so that hair loss can be reduced or even stopped. The question now is what is a good DHT level to stop hair loss?
DHT decides how many life cycles a hair follicle has before it dies. Therefore a lower DHT level means longer lasting hair. This is also true for hereditary baldness. DHT levels can raise when you under stress for example. Or they also go up when you do weight lifting as this type of exercise increases testosterone levels. Testosterone gets converted into DHT.
There is no normal or healthy way to change the testosterone level. Every men has testosterone and also the two enzymes that are involved in the process of converting the hormone into DHT. Therefore DHT blockers are the only choice nowadays.
It is still unknown how exactly hair loss works. At some point the growing cycle ends and then it is all over. As long there is no treatment that stops this process, reducing DHT levels is the best and only option.
Propecia works well for men but not in all men. Propecia can stop hair loss or at least reduce it. But you must take Propecia every day without exception and you must take it for at least 6-12 months before you see clear results. If you stop taking Propecia then you loose your hair again.
For women there are other products like Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Spironolactone that block DHT. Women should get tested for their ferritin levels. A value lower than 70 can be the reason for hair loss or hair thinning.

By: maria | 02-07-2008
Hi! I hope someone can help me find an answer to my hair loss. I am 43 and my hair comes out when i take a shower, lots of it. My scalp is pinkish-red and burns. I have very small bumps spread out around my scalp. I had my Thyroid check along with hormones, iron and everything is normal. Both my parents in their mid sixties have their hair so I don't think it is hereditary. I read that staph in the nose can cause hair loss. My doctor did a nose culture and it showed Enterobacter Aerogenes. What exactly is this and can this cause hair loss? I thought it could be my water I'm on town water. I thought it could be my shampoo and products which I have changed. Are there any diseases or allergies that can cause hair loss. Thanks for your help! Maria
