What are Some of the Causes of Sudden Hair Loss?

There two main causes of sudden hair loss namely genes and stress. Experiencing hair loss may be because of your genetic issues—inherited—which is not sudden but usually happens over time. What is sudden in this situation is that you see a large number of hairs staying in your brush or comb in the morning when you do your hair.

Although the sudden hair loss usually occurs in men, it can also happen to women. Severe stress has always been identified as the primary cause of sudden hair loss as it hinders with the inner process of the body’s hormones. Types of stress can be psychological stress or trauma to the body from major accidents or major surgery.

The disorder for the sudden hair loss is called Anagen Effluvium or Alopecia Areata, which varies from the cause of the hair loss. Anagen Effluvium is term used for those who are experiencing hair loss problems from chemicals and radiation. People who suffer from this type of problem are mostly undergoing cancer treatments, which interfere with the growing process of the hair. On the other hand, Alopecia Areata is a kind of hair problems, which is classified as an immune disorder. There is no explanation yet on the cause of this hair disorder but the process always results in the hair growing back on its own.

People that experience such sudden hair loss immediately contact their doctor to find the causes of this. If the result of the test will not show any signs of stress or side effects from recent medications of the body, then the sudden hair loss could be a warning sign that you might probably have an early signs of a disease such as diabetes or lupus or even a scalp problem.

Some people who are experiencing a sudden hair loss do not realize that cause of this is because of the DHT.  DHT or dihydrotestosterone is the process by which the skin in the scalp changes the testosterone of the body to DHT that eventually affects the hair growth, most especially to sensitive hairs.

Other forms of Alopecia are:

  • Alopecia Totalis—a total hair loss in the scalp
  • Alopecia Universalis—total hair loss all over the body

Treatments for sudden hair loss are hard to determine because the hair that falls off usually grows back on its own. Sometimes, Alopecia Areata is treated with Cortisone injections. Cortisone injections works by stimulating the hair follicles, which causes the hair to re-grow. This treatment is a series of injections and must be repeated once a month. The treatment has also the possibility of not working and there is no way one predict who will get the cure and who will not.

It is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing sudden hair loss. When testing, the doctor will first examine your blood to see if there is an infection or a deficiency in your hormones. Seeking professional help is important to identify the main causes of sudden hair loss you are experiencing.
