With the technology boom stirring up new waves every day, computers have taken a residence in the daily lives of most people, both young and old. There are many options ranging from hand held devices, netbooks, laptop notebooks and the tried and true personal computer. Though it seems that it is becoming the norm to carry a computer of some sort at all times, these portable devices cannot perform with the same strength and agility that a home desktop computer can at the same price point. Picking out a desktop computer may seem like old hat, but just as the face of laptops and netbooks are changing, so is the function of the traditional desktop pc.
Before picking out a desktop, one must first determine the purpose and use for the computer and the performance that will be expected of it. For business use or media use, memory and processing needs to be bigger and faster in comparison to a home computer, which is used mostly for viewing pictures, surfing the web, playing music and creating documents. If gaming however is on the agenda, a faster computer is recommended, as screen lag can become a problem in slower technology. The number of central processors in the computer determine much of these ratios. Though a single is perfectly fine for normal home use, two or more gives a desktop the ability to handle more programs at one time, with speed and efficiency.
Memory and hard drive space are two more components to review before purchasing a desktop computer. Just a few years ago, measuring with gigabytes blew the minds of many techies. Now, tetrabytes are breaking onto the scene with more to offer than ever before. However, for the average home user, a 500 GB hard drive and 1 GB of memory is more than enough space to perform and operate everyday functions.
Once processing speed and memory are taken care of, it's important to consider the available add-on options and features. Most windows operating PC's will offer a trial version of Microsoft Office, though many consumers purchase this package before ever getting their computer out of the box. Anti-Virus software is a must, considering identity theft is through the roof. Other additions could include a DVD burner, Blu-ray player, digital sound, web cam, graphics card, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, multiple USB ports, card readers or an over-sized monitor. It is no longer unusual to see a twenty-one inch monitor on a desktop computer.
For the novice, purchasing a desktop can be overwhelming. Make sure to shop around and compare prices, as there are specials run daily not only in brick and mortar stores, but on Internet websites and stores as well. Whether online, or in the store, it is important to purchase a computer with full understanding of the purchase, including warranty information and return policies. The desktop is far from obsolete, and is in a market all its own. With competition increasing daily, efficiency and aesthetic appeal are constantly growing, making consumers happier with their choice to purchase a desktop computer.
