A new battery must be charged before being used because it is stored without any charge. (Your computer manual will instruct you on how to charge the battery) When you first use the battery or if it has been stored for some time it may require up to four discharge/charge cycles in order to achieve its maximum charge capacity.
It is normal for the computer to indicate a full charge of the battery within ten to fifteen minutes of charging on the first charge cycle. If this happens simply remove the battery from the device and replace it immediately and resume charging.
Conditioning the battery is very important for battery longevity. To condition the battery completely discharge it and then charge it every regularly every two to three weeks. With an exception to Li-Ion batteries, failure to condition batteries It is important to condition (fully discharge and then fully charge) the battery every two to three weeks. Failure to do so may considerably reduce the battery's life. In order to completely discharge the battery just run the device until it shuts down or sets off a ‘low battery warning’. Then charge the battery according to the instructions in the manual.
If the battery will not be in use for a month or longer, it is recommended that it be removed from the device and stored in a cool, dry, clean place.
During charging and discharging a battery will generally give off some heat and become warm.
A battery will lose its charge due to internal discharge even if it is not in use, therefore a stored battery will need to be recharged before use.
The equipment will demand different amounts of power from time to time. This demand will vary according to the tasks the device is running and the programs that it is executing this will ascertain the time it will take for the battery to discharge. For instance in the case of a laptop, the monitor, the hard disk and various devices connected to the laptop are all adding to the load on the battery the more these devices draw power from the battery the faster it will run down. Here lies the importance in proper power management of the system (refer to power optimization in the manual).
