Sony AIT5 uses helical scan technology for recording information. The base of helical scan is stable rotating head. The tape cartridge also has a remote memory in cassette (R-MIC) that enables fast searches and quick media loads. User definable information, system log of tape and search map is contained in R-MIC. The information in the chip helps the tape drive to quickly advance to any file on AIT-5 tape media at a high speed.
