Barcode scanning technology has emerged as one of the most assistive technologies in recent history. CCD barcode scanners, laser scanners, cordless scanners and a host of other technological devices have come to the assistance of consumer’s world wide. Barcode scanning technology has become so integrated into the everyday lives of people around the world that it is virtually impossible to think of a time when barcode scanning didn’t exist.

For most of us, the best example of using barcode technology comes when we go shopping. Our markets check out kiosk has been transformed from an error prone labor intensive operation to an efficient point of sale station. The technology has created such ease and efficiency that consumers have welcomed it with open arms. The shopping experience has been totally transformed by the addition of barcode scanning technology.

A trip to the local market means used to mean getting a cart, walking the store, colleting items and then proceeding to the check out. Not much has changed through the years, but in the past, perhaps the most dreaded part of the experience was the trip to the check out. There, the whole trip would lose what ever luster it may have had. Throngs of people would be milling about waiting for the check out person to finish out the transaction. Each item in each cart had to be laboriously searched until the price was found, and then, entered into the cash register, a very time consuming procedure at best.

Check out lanes could also be prone to error. With all the items that had to be tallied in the carts, it was only inevitable that somewhere along the line there would be a misread of some items cost, and even worse, sometimes items would not be marked, calling for the dreaded price check. These error prone and inconvenient encounters at the check out lane could become the thing of legend.

Standing there, watching check out clerks work their way through orders, one could concoct many scenarios of doom and gloom, and any errors that occurred usually would not be found out until well after check out, to late for any price adjustment. Unless the buyer was paying snap to attention, often difficult to do when waiting so long, they could very well pay too much.

Barcode scanners have brought a new era of shopping to consumers. The barcode technology has virtually eliminated many of the old ways of shopping and has relieved much of the stress associated with the check out line. Now, with new technology, ease and accuracy are the norm. Lines move efficiently as consumers and check out clerks move quickly through the process. The check out line has become a welcome addition to the shopping process, rather than the dreaded final phase before leaving.

Consumers are reaping an advantage from barcode scanned check out lines. Gone are the days of the throngs of people milling about and dreaded price checks. Barcode technology has made shopping easier for everyone.
